It can affect both sexes, although mothers are more susceptible to it. According to American Psychological Association, some 9 to 16 percent of women experience PPD after childbirth. When postpartum depression reaches its extreme, it can turn into postpartum psychosis. It affects 1 to 2 out of every 1,000 cases of PPD.
